Basic features
You may search FAOLEX either through a single area (Agriculture, Air & atmosphere, Cultivated Plants, Energy, Environment gen., Fisheries, Food, Forestry, Land & soil, Livestock, Mineral resources, Sea, Waste & hazardous substances, Water, Wild species & ecosystems) or through All subjects, if you are interested in more than one or all areas. The layout of the search page is always the same with the following exceptions: "Main subjects" is available only in All subjects. "Basin" is available only in All subjects, Agriculture, Environment gen., Fisheries, Land & soil and Water. Each field has an AND/OR combo-box. In addition, all the fields are preceded by the inter-field Boolean operators AND, OR, NOT.

Search using one field
If you would like to specify more than one term in a field (e.g. Country/Territory): select terms from the List (terms will be automatically separated by semi colons); enter terms manually and separate them with a semicolon; select AND to find records where all of the terms appear in the field; select OR to find records where at least one of the selected terms appears; to exclude search results that contain certain terms place "^" or AND NOT in front of the term to be excluded.

Search using two or more fields
The fields are by default connected by AND. This allows you to create very specific searches (see example below).

The system will return documents on land legislation enacted in the
Russian Federation on land reform in the year 2000. In the same search click on NOT to exclude the year 2000 from your search results (see example below).

Search using the List button
In most search fields the List buttons take you to an alphabetical list of terms used in the database. We encourage the use of the Lists in order to avoid fruitless or wrong search results due to non-correspondence of terms used. You may select from the Lists as many terms as you wish by checking the corresponding box. To include chosen term/s in your search just click on Select. To return to the search page click on Go back.

How to refine search results
The system displays up to a maximum of 200 results. To narrow down your search results: use specific terms from the List buttons on the right hand side of each field; use the AND connector between terms; fill in as many fields as possible; Year, Language, Keywords and/or Type of Text are particularly effective to narrow down search results.

Dictionary supported search
This tool allows you to view the keywords with their scope notes and relationships within the database. This search is useful in case of a keyword-based search, i.e. when the objective of the search is the use of a specific keyword independently from the country, the language of record, etc. The list of keywords may be browsed by Main subject (systematic), in alphabetical order (alphabetic), or by KeyWords Out of Context (KWOC). To select the desired keyword/s click on the corresponding blue button and then on SEARCH. The system will return results by Record Number. If you wish to refine your search and specify more fields click on EDIT QUERY to reach the standard search page. Click on CLEAR before starting a new search.
