The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, the Secretary of State for Health and the Secretary of State for Wales, acting jointly, in relation to England and Wales, and the Secretary of State for Scotland in relation to Scotland, in exercise of the powers conferred by sections 6(4), 16(1)(a) and (e), 17(1), 26(1) and (3) and 48(1) of, and paragraph 1 of Schedule 1 to, the Food Safety Act 1990[1] and of all other powers enabling them in that behalf, hereby make the following Regulations, after consultation in accordance with section 48(4) of the said Act with such organisations as appear to them to be representative of interests likely to be substantially affected by the Regulations. Title, commencement and interpretation
(2) In these Regulations "the principal Regulations" means the Sweeteners in Food Regulations 1995[2]. Amendment of the principal Regulations
Consequential provision
(2) The provisions to which paragraph (1) above
refers are-
(ii) the Jam and Similar Products (Scotland) Regulations 1981[5];
(ii) the Meat Products and Spreadable Fish Products (Scotland) Regulations
1984[7];
(d) the definition of "sweetener" in regulation 2(1) (interpretation) of the Miscellaneous Food Additives Regulations 1995[9]; and (e) in the Food Labelling Regulations 1996[10]-
(ii) in Schedule 8 (misleading descriptions) Part 1 (general), the
condition in column 2 opposite the description "ice cream" in column 1.

These Regulations, which apply to Great Britain, further amend the Sweeteners in Food Regulations 1995, by bringing up to date a reference to Directive 95/31/EC on specific purity criteria so as to cover its amendment by Directive 98/66/EC, which changed the specification for isomalt, and by bringing up to date references to the 1995 Regulations in other Regulations. No regulatory impact assessment has been prepared in relation to these Regulations.
